What is an IMEI number?

An IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a 15-digit number that identifies a mobile phone or other cellular device. Networks use it to recognise devices and to block phones reported as stolen. You can see your own phone's IMEI by dialling *#06#.

The first 8 digits are the Type Allocation Code (TAC), which identifies the maker and model. The next 6 are the device's serial number, and the last digit is a check digit calculated with the Luhn algorithm, which catches most typing mistakes.

The numbers made here pass the Luhn check, so they are suitable for testing forms and software. They are random and do not belong to real devices.
