What is a MAC address?

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a 48-bit hardware address given to a network interface such as an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi card. It is usually written as six pairs of hexadecimal digits, for example 00:1A:C2:7B:00:47.

The first three bytes normally identify the manufacturer. Two bits in the first byte have a special meaning: one marks the address as unicast or multicast, the other as globally unique (set by the maker) or locally administered (set by you).

Locally administered unicast

With this option ticked, every address is marked as locally administered unicast, the correct kind for virtual machines, containers and test devices, so it can never clash with a real manufacturer's address.
